The Ministry received a wide variety of comments from a number of stakeholders from the mineral industry to environmental organizations to municipalities to private land owners.
Generally, there was strong support for increased regulatory oversight of mining activities and more emphasis on engagement with Aboriginal communities. Mineral Industry respondents asked for more clarity in terms of rules for consultation with Aboriginal communities and ensure certainty of tenure is protected. A number of citizens are calling for enhanced land owners’ rights and greater municipal oversight of mineral development activities.
In the development of proposed legislative amendments, the Ministry considered all input received on the discussion paper, “Modernizing Ontario’s Mining Act – Finding a Balance”.
