The Ministry of Northern Development and Mines (“Ministry”) is proposing to renew the Ontario Mineral Development Strategy (“strategy”), which was released in 2006. Towards this end, the ministry has prepared a discussion paper to seek public input into the development of the new strategy.
Ontario’s mineral development landscape has changed dramatically in recent years and continues to evolve today. To maintain the momentum generated by the 2006 Mineral Development Strategy, renewal of key strategic priorities is warranted. This renewal is being launched by asking industry partners, Aboriginal communities and other interested parties to share their advice on maximizing Ontario’s mineral potential with respect to jobs, productivity and innovation, protection of the environment and Aboriginal economic participation.
The discussion paper is intended to encourage consideration of the challenges and opportunities facing the mineral sector. It approaches the subject of change occurring within the mineral development landscape by outlining the key global and local drivers influencing Ontario’s mineral exploration and mining industry. The paper concludes by asking several key questions to elicit comments and suggestions on how to address these changes.
The Ministry is seeking input on the discussion paper. To view the detailed discussion paper, please see the link under Additional Information entitled “Discussion Paper”.
Engagement workshops on the discussion paper will be held from March 9 to May 6 , 2015 to seek feedback “in-person” from interested parties.
