Culture contributes significantly to quality of life. It has been linked to improved health, skills development and learning, and social inclusion. At the community level, culture has been shown to have significant economic benefits, attract tourism, and enhance sense of place.
In order to build on the social and economic benefits of culture, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS) is developing the first ever culture strategy for the province. The strategy will set the government’s priorities and actions to support the culture sector over the next five years. To help inform the development of the culture strategy, MTCS is engaging the public, stakeholders and communities across Ontario.
This discussion paper provides background on the culture sector and outlines key principles of government support, to help begin this dialogue. The paper also describes three factors having a profound impact on the culture sector in Ontario: demographic changes, digital transformation, and the fiscal environment.
Through the discussion paper we are seeking your feedback on:
• The value of culture;
• The ways that people are participating in culture;
• Ways to inspire more youth to participate in Ontario’s culture;
• How government can best meet the needs of the culture sector, and what could be improved in order to strengthen and grow the sector.
