Application has been made by Lafarge Canada Inc. to permit a change in final rehabilitation of the Dundas South Quarry. The amendment proposes to revise the rehabilitation plan to coincide with the potential licensing of lands to the west, also owned by Lafarge, and integrate the two rehabilitation plans. The Dundas South Quarry site plan amendment application includes adding conditions related to the integration of the operation, removal of setbacks adjacent to the proposed South Quarry extension, minor housekeeping items, and revisions to the rehabilitation plan to develop an integrated and comprehensive rehabilitated landform. The revisions to the rehabilitation plan include the creation of an approximately 77 ha lake, 13 ha of wetland and 70 ha of upland habitat (grassland and woodlands). Such a landform would reduce the amount of fill required to be imported to the site and help restore the local groundwater level in the long-term.
The current approved rehabilitation plan permits backfilling with clean inert fill and the potential to create a golf course subject to a City of Hamilton Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendment.
